  • This is my (rather terrible) list from nearly a year ago:

    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Joe Louis
    3. Jack Dempsey
    4. Larry Holmes
    5. Jack Johnson
    6. Joe Frazier
    7. Sonny Liston
    8. Rocky Marciano
    9. George Foreman
    10. Lennox Lewis

I now have the same ten but in a very different order.

    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Joe Louis
    3. Larry Holmes
    4. George Foreman
    5. Jack Johnson
    6. Rocky Marciano
    7. Lennox Lewis
    8. Joe Frazier
    9. Jack Dempsey
    10. Sonny Liston

How I ever had Dempsey at no.3 is beyond me, he doesnt deserve to be anywhere near that. Having Frazier above Foreman is strange as well, that had to change. Anyway I feel it's a lot better now.

Definite improvement.. I'm not fully sold on Johnson and Dempsey so they don't quite get into mine, but it's down to opinion anyway..

Are there any Basildon prospects at the moment?.. Haven't heard of any since Georgie Smith, LWW who went off the rails.. I don't get the Evening Echo where I am now, so you could say, i've lost touch.. I used to live in that area when Terry Marsh was champ..

I think it was reading Unforgivable Blackness, the book on Jack Johnson that really put across his struggles and inspired me to put him so high, I know his detractors say he avoided black fighters once he became champ but he did clear up Langford, McVea and Jeanette previously. Also of course the same blame could be laid at Dempsey's door for never fighting Harry Wills but whether or not it was his fault they never fought I think he sneaks into my top ten for trancending the sport and changing the way heavyweights fought. However I can understand someone saying they dont have enough film evidence to make a decision, in the way Harry Greb often splits fans.

Anyway, Basildon prospects? I can only think of Big Bad John McDermott, if you can consider him a prospect haha. There are plenty of good fighters coming out of Es*** at the moment though, I was hoping to go to the Mitchell-Katsidis fight as I'm a big Kevin Mitchell fan and I have a mate who works up there selling tickets, I have to see if I can get the money together first though.

          • eternal thread

I`m against calling any fighter number 1 or 2 or etc - I find it dumb... Giving a number "1" to anybody will undeservingly put him above the other fighters...

Just, my top 5 would include:

            Louis
            Marciano
            Ali
            Foreman
            Lewis

            And 6-10 would be:

            Johnson
            Tunney
            Holmes
            Holyfield

and the last one is under consideration... It is really tough... Frazier was limited but an ATG HW... Liston was pretty good, but had a weak resume... I don`t buy Jeffries and Dempsey and Bowe at all... Norton deserves all the credit in the world for his fights against Ali, but he had his stumbling-block (big punchers). If Wlad finishes his career strongly he can fill that spot (no wonder, yeah? )...

Fair list! Foreman and Johnson would be opposite in my eyes but still a very nice list! Cheers for sharing.

YW, like I said, it's ever changing. And the fact that I'm a huge fan of Big George might have something to do with why he's so high on my list.
