  • Rocky Marciano was only a 5'10", 185 lb. Fighter. Yet, he would have beat all the bums you listed before him. I know, because I watched him train live in 1955, while in Calistoga, CA. And, I saw alot of fighters in my time!

why didnt he fight liston then in the 50s?
just asking, marciano wasnt older at the time liston was around than the fighters he defended his title against.

Liston didn't emerge as a contender until after Marciano retired. A better case could be made for him fighting Patterson who HAD risen to contender status by that point.

Because Marciano retired in 1955, when Liston had been a pro for only two years and was still fighting tomato cans. It would be like saying Vitali Klitschko retired without facing Tyson Fury.

The case is sometimes made with reference to Patterson, but he too had only been a pro 3 years and was still fighting at LHW when Rocky retired.

                • Only from fighters I've seen enough of...

                  1. Ali
                  2. Joe Louis
                  3. Lennox
                  4. Larry Holmes

I haven't seen enough of Marciano, Dempsey, Liston...loads of people like that. So I can't include them, but I'm sure they're up there challenging for the top spots.

I'd counter that by saying Frank Bruno COULD possibly be on the worst list as he won the belt against a crack head and lost in his 1st defense against a rapist. Lewis was my fave boxer growing up but even I can't call him top 3 of all time

                    • This thread has been a bit quiet recently so i thought i would put up previous lists of mine and see how much they have changed:

                      2006:

                      Joe Louis
                      Muhammad Ali

                      George Foreman
                      Joe Frazier
                      Larry Holmes
                      Jack Dempsey
                      Jack Johnson
                      Lennox Lewis

                      4.Mike Tyson
                      5.Lennox Lewis
                      6.Evander Holyfield
                      7.Joe Frazier
                      8.Jack Johnson
                      9.Jack Dempsey
                      10.George Foreman

                      Current:

                      1.Muhammed Ali
                      2.Joe Louis
                      3.Larry Holmes
                      4.Jack Johnson
                      5.Mike Tyson

                      8.Jack Dempsey
                      9.Joe Frazier
                      10.George Foreman

At the moment i am debating the positions of Dempsey and Evander, im considering switching them.

Its credit to the people on this forum that my lists have changed as i have learnt more and more on each fighter!

Would be interesting to see how other peoples lists have changed!
