The worst possible way to become a champion.

First of all i have a lot of respect for Lennox Lewis and i think he was a great fighter, but one thing that still bugs me is the manner in which he accepted the WBC title when Rid**** Bowe opted to dump it. Surely it must have been embarrassing, which begs the question... Could he not have refused to accept the WBC title without actually fighting for it?
Rid**** Bowe made the situation awkward by refusing to fight Lewis, and despite what he claimed at that time he was simply scared s*itless of Lewis. I think he went on to fight the drug ravaged Michael Dokes instead, while Lewis went on to face the more dangerous Tony Tucker.

More shame on Bowe than Lewis. And although it was a bad way in, Lewis made sure at the end of his career that there was no doubt who was the champion.

Its ALOT better to get the title that way than they way max smeling (i dont know how to spell his last name) got it. Jack sharkey hit him low and max was carried to his corner unable to continue....and on his stool was awarded the bout by foul and was the new heavyweight champion. What about ernie terrel also? he was a pretty lame paper champion as well.

I was going to say that. Schmelling was known as the Low Blow Champion and even Germany didn't like him that much.

I agree. Much better to prove your earned it rather than just give it up.

By actually fighting, the worst way to win a championship is by disqualification of the opponent. It's inconclusive.

The worst ways to become champion might belong to Derrick Gainer, who won the featherweight title by low-blowing Freddie Norwood.

Ken Norton would've been lent a great deal of credability to his championship claim had he gotten the chance to fight Leon Spinks, instead of Spinks being stripped by one of the organizations and being awarded a vacated belt.

What about the acting jobs of Montell Griffin (against Roy Jones) and Luis Santana (against Terry Norris)?

Santana was actually said to have been smiling while on the stretcher, going to the ambulance.
