Jame Toney is hands down the toughest fighter of the last 20 yrs period. I can't think of any fighter that starts at 160 and goes up to heavyweight without being knocked out. He talks **** but unlike other fighters he doesn't run, he stands in front of you and digs into your gut and rips you with viscious uppercuts. A lot of people say that Roy Jones jr is more impressive than Toney but Toney took on all and ducked none.
He put on one of the best displays of pure skill that I have ever seen against Barkley. He was unbelievable in that fight. He may have been inconsistant and lazy outsite of the ring, but when he was at his best he was a great fighter. A sure hall of famer, although his steroid issues at the end of his career may keep him from being first ballot.

and not only that, toney has more wins than jones, and toney is almost 40.
and ... jones is a 3 division champion, toney is a 4 division champion (Middleweight,Light Heavyweight,Cruiserweight,Heavyweight).
setting the record straight
Jones won MAJOR titles at 160, 168, 175, HW.
Toney won MAJOR titles at 160, 168, 190.
Toney also won bull**** titles at 175 and HW.
So from this point of view Jones has won more belts than Toney.
However, Toney was the man in two divs (middle and cruiser). Jones was NEVER the lineal champ.
Finally Jones beat Toney fair and square, and if Toney failed to lose weight gradually it is his fault. Jones did not impose any ridiculous conditions at the table (he did not play a Duran-Leonard 2 on Toney). Jones just came in perfect shape and fought a perfect fight, nothing wrong with that.
Jones style could take him only to a short and impressive career. Toney's style (and uber-chin) makes for a long career.
Two of the three great fighters of the previous generation.
I think these "JT did not get KTFOed" and the possible answers "RJJ does not have two losses to Griffin and gifts" are pretty useless debates.
If you want to see a great close fight with a young toney digging deep in his arsenal of moves (against an often overlooked great technician) I recommend Toney-McCallum I.
