Hey Buddy. Believe it or not, I'm in the school's computer lab, doing a report on Jack Dempsey. Needless to say, I jumped on the oppurtunity to cover his career. I won't have to do much research.
In all honesty, he's by far the most overrated fighter in history.

But here's where I see his being overrated: Dempsey took a relatively easy route to stardom. No lie. He captured the title in stunning form, but he was inconsistent and hardly fought. he also ducked numerous great fighters, and quite blatantly. Them being black was an excuse. The real problem was that they were big threats.

The public demand for that fight didn't exist because of the fear of a Black Champ. So financially it wouldn't have made sense anyhow.

Easy route to stardom? Dempsey had one of the hardest roads to the championship of ANY heavyweight champion. Prepare yourself for an F if your teacher knows anything about boxing history.
Dempsey had it so hard getting to the top that it's difficult to really blame the guy for not fighting once he got the title. If you went from being homeless and clinging to the bottom of trains to get to your next fight (and pray to God you'd win so you could afford dinner) to being on top of the world you wouldn't be in any hurry to fight and risk your title either. And Sullivan and the rest before Jack all enjoyed their time at the top, opting to act in plays and give speeches over fighting for long stretches of inactivity. Few milked it to the degree Dempsey did, but other than Sullivan, NONE of them obtained the fame that he did. Dempsey was the brightest star in ring history until Ali came along. I don't think you understand just how big the name Dempsey was in America for a good portion of the 20th century. Bigger than Marciano, bigger than Louis, bigger than them all (pre Ali of course).
Calling his road to the top easy is just ludicrous though. I mean compared to Dempsey, even Tyson had a sheltered life. At least Mike had a gang to run with when he was a teen, and once he met D'Amato he was pretty much pampered until he fell apart (even now his definition of bankrupt raises eyebrows with the expendable cash he still seems to have). Dempsey had NO ONE he could really trust to watch his back from the moment he left home.
As for champion level accomplishments, Dempsey cleaned up the whole division on his way up. By the time he'd won, he'd already beaten many of the best contenders, in most cases by knockout. Harry Wills is the only fighter you can seriously accuse him of ducking and rouse people to your cause and Jack signed the dotted lines to make that fight. Dempsey wasn't afraid of anyone.
One of the most underrated heavyweights ever.

That's complete horse **** everyone said he held on to trains for entire rides. That's actually the ******est thing I've ever heard. But a lot of that hobo stuff is true. But definitley not all of it.

I meant in his career, and climbing the ranks. He fought nobodies, and got a title shot.
