I went over Henry Armstrong's record in the Boxing Register last night
and discovered something very unexpected. Armstrong successfully
defended the welterweight title against Ernie Roderick in May of 1939.
Roderick was rated. Armstrong would not again defeat a rated fighter
until June of 1942 when he beat Sheik Rangel. He made 12 successful
defenses of his welterweight title from the Roderick fight to the Zivic
fight, but none were against rated fighters! Ambers was rated and
defeated him in a lightweight title bout. Zivic was rated and defeated
him twice in welterweight title fights. He drew with Garcia for the
middleweight title. He did have have an over the weight non-title fight
with the reigning lightweight champion, the often soused Lew Jenkins.
These stats on ratings, I repeat, are from the Boxing Register.
