There’s a new book called Boxing’s Top 100: The Greatest Champions Of All Time by Bill Gray. I don’t know if anyone else has picked this up but I didn’t see it available from Amazon the last time I checked so it might be a bit hard to find but it’s worth getting if you can find it. The author has created his list using statistics rather than opinions. The statistics are built on such factors as length of career, number of title bouts won, percentage of total wins by knockout, career win-loss percentage and percent of career as champion.
I just started reading it and skipping around different listings but it goes into a lot of detail about some fighters and sort of skims through others. Sugar Ray Robinson is ranked number one, Archie Moore is number two, Henry Armstrong three, Roberto Duran four and Julio Caesar Chavez five. Muhammad Ali comes in at six. Joe Louis is at eleven, Roy Jones Jr. comes in at thirty-seven, just to give an idea of some of the other rankings. I’m sure some people may not agree with the assessments given but it’s still a worthwhile and fun read if you get a chance.
