Barney Ross was probably the greatest of all the ***ish fighters. But many others such as Benny Leonard, Jackie Fields, Charlie Rosenberg, Benny Bass, Bummy Davis, Maxie Roosenbloom and many others played apart in the golden era of boxing and should not be forgotten. You guys should read "When Boxing was a ***ish Sport", a great read. Throughout history the impoverished have dominated the fight game. The Irish, ***ish, Italian, Black, Puerto Rican and the Mexican. Coming from tough enviroments such as the Soviet Union, Manila, Managua or Tijauna has shaped many of our generations fighters. It is always interesting to see how the socio-economic landscape has played a major role into who is leading in the fight game.
Great post, Buddy, though I honestly think Leonard would edge out Ross....and that's not a disrespect of Ross, who could hold his own today, just as any of these great fighters you listed.

Boxing is a sport where you can actually get a glimpse of socio-economic history among **********. In the early part of the 20th Century, ***ish, Italian, Irish, and Polish immigrants were the ones living in the ******s and scaping to get by. Some make a big deal out of ethnicity saying Race X is physically superiour; but that's hogwash....it's all about hunger and role models. If you're a young Irishman, you notice others who share your heritage and whether or not they are successful and at what they are successful....and you just might give that field a go yourself.

Pre WWII ***ish immigrants and second generation American-***s were in that demographic and produced some of the finest fighters the sport has ever seen. It's easy to forget over time the impact of these boxers; but I'd put Benny Leonard up against any Lightweight who has ever lived....and that includes Roberto Duran, Julio Caesar Chavez, Joe Gans, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was that damn good....same with Ross and even Rosenbloom.

Being a fighter is part talent, part ability, part learning, and all heart and want-to; if you've got something to fight for or something to aspire towards, the better you're going to do.....the better chance you've got. That's why you never hear of a kid with a silver spoon in his mouth hitting the bag in a sweaty old gym.

Probably Benny Leonard would be the role model ***ish fighters aspired to be. Most were New Yorkers with a few exceptions. Fields(California), Ross(Chicago), Rosenbloom and Bass(Philadelphia).

Just because some are well off now, it doesn't mean it was always so. ***s were once among the lowest of the low in the U.S., right alongside the Irish, the Italian, and just about any immigrant.

You've been mislead my friend. Someone is teaching you far too many stereotypes. ***s, when they first came to America, were treated like second-class citizens along with my ancestors, Irish immigrants; but many families worked their way up through society by scrimping and saving and eventually starting their own businesses. That's the way the "American Dream" works; you start off with nothing and over time and with hard work, you become affluent.

***s, like all immigrants, were really looked down upon when they first came here....and apparently, even after 6 million were killed in Europe due to similar prejudices they are still being villanized.

And that's certainly no slight towards Barney Ross either, as like you said in a following post, Benny Leonard can be argued as one of the very greatest fighters of all-time no matter the weight division. I know I personally see him as such, as well as being the greatest fighter to have ever fought in his own division at lightweight...

As far as ***ish fighters go, I'd rank Ross behind Leonard, then I'd probably fill out the top five with names like Ted Kid Lewis, Abe Attell, and Joe Choynski...Berg, Rosenbloom, Lew Tendler, etc. filling out top ten spots mos likely, and if I was to include the pre-Queensberry era, I would have to find a spot in there for Daniel Mendoza, no doubt.

Lots a great fighters there, and as Buddy points out, also a TON of rich history (yes, the early 1900's were wonderful, with so many great fighters, and with ethnic background being a large selling point in the sport, so many great matchups), as that's only a tiny sampling of some of the better ***ish fighters fighters that have stepped into the ring...From Mendoza (possibly earlier) to Zab Judah, that covers a lot of history in the sport and that's a history that's going to outlive us all by many lifetimes.
