Tyson could not generate the force Dempsey could in close. Dempsey is the hardest puncher of any heavyweight I've seen within the proximity of a foot or so. No one else could inflict as much damage with his punches at that distance. That was one of the things that made Dempsey so dangerous: he could end you right out of a clinch.

I love Joe Louis' style, I think Foreman, Frazier, Dempsy and Tyson hit harder. Or should I say caused more damage given fighters they faced in my opinion had better defensive techiques. I would argue the agresive style of Tyson to be a favorite to. And couldn't argue to much with the threadstarter Tommy hearns could mix it up. I was hsitant to answere given the fact who has the best could mean a lot of things strongest, most effective, what are we getting at? But I'll stand with my answere.

i think hearns cross is the best punch though because of its combination of speed accuracy and of course POWER! i'm working on acquiring that punch!

Chris Eubank, before he had to kill himself to make a weight limit, had surgical precision about his output and had every shot in the book. He wouldn't waste a single punch, then when he sensed his opponent was in trouble he'd unleash punches from a baffling vareity of angles with bewildering speed and accuracy.

Are we talking punch placement and accuracy, power or speed? You could argue about this all day but I'd say either Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson or Muhammed Ali.
However, you could argue in favour of many of the great boxers, there is no correct answer to this question which makes it a good one. Nice thread.

in terms of the ideal puncher's STYLE... as in if i had natural dynamite in my hands and i had to pick a body type and primary form of delivery, i think it doesn't get any better than hearns.
blazing fast hands, and most importantly a slicing, rapid fire jab that'd keep the other guy out of his punching range, while at the same time being caught on the end of yours. the perfect offensive machine when needed to be.
tyson's style could get offset by grabbers, and i don't like the fact that you have to always be on the front foot constantly.
