Michael Hunter’s one and only experience with purse bids revealed to him the hazards of being a free agent in boxing. The heavyweight contender was criticized in the spring for turning down an IBF heavyweight eliminator against highly regarded Croatian Filip Hrgovic after the matchup went to a purse bid and was won by Hrgovic’s co-promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, who, incidentally, was Hunter’s former promoter for a brief stretch. Hunter, however, had no promotional backing, thus, no leverage to negotiate a better deal for himself.
It made better business sense. That’s Michael Hunter’s simple explanation for why he withdrew from an IBF heavyweight elimination match with Filip Hrgovic recently to fight an unknown, 38-year-old opponent on the Teofimo Lopez-George Kambosos Jr. undercard. Hunter has drawn criticism for pulling out of a fight that could’ve made him the IBF’s mandatory challenger for one of Anthony Joshua’s titles, but the American contender isn’t concerned about what’s being said or written about his 10-round pay-per-view fight with Mike Wilson on June 19 at loanDepot Park in Miami.
Former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker would be open to the possibility of facing undefeated Filip Hrgovic, who is looking for a dance partner for an ordered IBF final eliminator. The winner would fall in line for a potential world title shot against the victor of Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury.
Olympic bronze medal winner Filip Hrgovic his giving Anthony Joshua the edge to come out victorious in a high stakes unification with Tyson Fury. Joshua and Fury are close to finalizing the details of their summer showdown, with the IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO, WBC world titles at stake in the fight.
Heavyweight prospect Alen 'The Savage' Babic is very motivated to get in the ring with his amateur rival, Olympic bronze medal winner Filip Hrgovic. The two boxers do not like each other and very harsh words have been exchanged between them in the last two years.
Filip Hrgovic remains one fight away from contending for his first major title. What he is currently left without, for the moment, is an opponent to get him to that point. The unbeaten heavyweight is on the hunt for a new foe after fellow contender Michael Hunter II reportedly withdrew from their IBF title eliminator, two sources familiar with the development confirmed to BoxingScene.com. The previously ordered bout was designed to determine the next mandatory challenger to the IBF heavyweight title currently held by England’s Anthony Joshua (24-1, 22KOs), though is unlikely to move forward in present form.
Michael Hunter and Filip Hrgovic can move forward with long discussed plans for a head-on collision. An ordered IBF title eliminator between the pair of top-rated heavyweight contenders is due to make its way to the schedule in the near future. Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Boxing secured the promotional rights to the fight as the lone bidder during a purse bid hearing which was conducted Tuesday via Zoom from IBF headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey.
Two of the top heavyweight contenders will have more time to figure out a way to meet in the ring. An extended negotiation period has been granted for the IBF title eliminator between Michael Hunter II and Filip Hrgovic, sanctioning body officials confirmed to BoxingScene.com on Tuesday. The bout was due to serve as the subject of a purse bid hearing to have been held Tuesday afternoon, with both sides requesting more time in hopes of reaching a deal.
