Felix Verdejo: record, next fight and profile →
SAN JUAN, PR - Two of the biggest attractions of Puerto Rican boxing today, unbeaten Puerto Rican contendesr Felix 'El Diamante' Verdejo and Christopher 'Smurf' Diaz, return to the 'Isla del Encanto' to star in the featured bouts of 'Solo Boxeo Tecate 'that will take place on Saturday April 16 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente of Puerto Rican capital.
New York, NY - The future of Puerto Rican boxing seems to be squared on the shoulders of 22 year old Felix Verdejo (20-0, 14 KO’s). Though the island has two title holders in Jose Pedraza and Roman Martinez, the more known of the three has yet to have faced the same level of competition as his two countrymen.
Promoter Greg Cohen believes that he has the perfect foe for the highly regarded Felix Verdejo, who is set for a busy schedule of fights in the first half of 2016. Which would be his lightweight Tony Luis, who recently defeated Samuel Amoaka on February 19th in Sloan, Iowa.
Terence Crawford’s one-sided 5th round stoppage of Hank Lundy made for an emphatic debut appearance at a sold-out Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York City. However, the perceived mismatch not only played out as expected on paper, but also suffering slightly in the ratings department on a busy sports night.
There was nothing wrong with trash-talking your opponent. There is a problem though if you can't back it up. Hank Lundy talked the talk in the build-up to his Saturday clash against Terence Crawford, but could not back it up when it counted most: inside the ring.
Theater, Madison Square Garden, New York City - A battle of undefeated lightweights saw Puerto Rican sensation Felix Verdejo (20-0, 14KOs) box his way to a one-sided ten round unanimous decision over William Silva (23-1, 14KOs). The scores were 100-90, 100-90, 99-91. Verdejo was patient in the first two rounds, outboxing Silva. He stepped up the pace in third and started letting his hands go more often. As the fight played out, Verdejo continued to get more active and Silva's activity was dropping.
While Felix Verdejo goes by the nickname of 'Diamante' (which is diamond in Spanish), one wonders if that stone does him justice. Verdejo may be 22 years of age, but boxing fans are salivating at the talent he possesses. Some believe Verdejo has not even hit his ceiling. There will be world titles that will be won one day, possibly as soon as early 2017. But Verdejo will be the first to say he does not want to get ahead of himself.
New York, NY - Not many out there are given undefeated lightweight William Silva (23-0, 14 KO’s) a chance to upset hot Puerto Rican prospect Felix Verdejo later tonight at the Theater in Madison Square Garden. To add insult to his odds, Verdejo already has date set up in April to fight in Puerto Rico with another return likely due in June in New York on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
BoxingScene.com was recently on hand to watch unbeaten lightweight William "Baby Face" Silva (23-0) train for his upcoming HBO televised clash against Felix "Diamante" Verdejo (19-0). The fight takes place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York in chief support of the Terence Crawford-Hank Lundy main event.
Bob Arum of Top Rank had a big star in Miguel Cotto, promoting him from his earliest days as a prospect and growing him from contender into a multi-division world titleholder and a headliner who drew huge crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Arum no longer has Cotto, who’s now with Roc Nation Sports, but Top Rank does have lightweight contender Felix Verdejo. And Verdejo, who is still a few months shy of his 23rd birthday and is 19-0 with 14 KOs, is already an attraction in the Puerto Rican community.
