Felix Verdejo is Hunting For a New Trainer To Join Team

By Miguel Rivera

Felix Verdejo (23-1, 15 KOs) admitted yesterday that he is in the process of evaluating candidates to determine who will join his team of trainer during the preparation for their next engagement in the ring.

The idea took relevance this past March when Verdejo suffered the first defeat of his professional career, when he was knocked out by Mexico's Antonio Lozada Jr. in the tenth round of their fight at The Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The contest was Verdejo's first fight in over a year, after struggling to beat Oliver Flores in February 2017.

Verdejo's career took a turn for the worse in 2016, when he was involved in a motorbike accident, which removed him from a mandatory world title fight with Terry Flanagan.

After he suffered a training camp injury in 2017, the WBO was forced to remove him from his mandatory position.

For now, Verdejo will wait patiently to determine which direction that his career in boxing will take. One possibility was to ascend to 140 pounds. However, that has been ruled out for now.

"[To get a new trainer], that is still standing. We have not yet decided who the new member [of the team] will be, but it is still standing. Yes we are going to add a person," said Verdejo to Primera Hora.

Verdejo will go through some tests to confirm if his body can remain at 135 - or if a move to 140 would be necessary.

"Obviously, it will be someone who has experience and can help us. I still have in mind to stay at 135 pounds. I will do some special tests to determine if my body can make the weight without losing muscle mass," he said.

Verdejo speculated that he could be on his way to return to the ring between August and September.
