Evens Pierre Knocks Francisco Contreras Out in Seventh

By Francisco Salazar

Lightweight contender Evens Pierre broke Francisco Contreras down Thursday night, winning by knockout in round seven at the Karibe Contention Center in Petionville, Haii.

Pierre (30-1, 20 knockouts), who resides in nearby Port-au-Prince, mostly dominated the action from the opening bell. Pierre landed a shot to the body, dropping Contreras to the canvas. Referee Samuel Burgos counted Contreras out at 59 seconds.

The 34-year-old Pierre, who has won his last 18 bouts, is the mandatory challenger to face newly-crowned Vasiliy Lomachenko. A potential fight between the two is highly unlikely as Lomachenko is penciled to face WBO lightweight titleholder Ray Beltran in a unification bout on Aug. 25 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Contreras (32-9, 24 KOs) has lost four of his last five bouts. He is originally from the Dominican Republic and currently resides in Irvington, New Jersey.

Former world junior middleweight title challenger Wilky Campfort won an 11 round unanimous decision over Rodrigo Mejia of Mexico.

Scores were 110-99.5, 108.5-103, and 107-102 for Campfort, who improves to 25-3, 11 KOs. Campfort, who is ranked number 12 by the WBA, has won his last four bouts.

The 39-year-old Mejia falls to 14-11-3, 6 KOs.

Fringe welterweight contender Johan Perez (24-5-2, 16 KOs) of Venezuela won a 10 round unanimous decision over Aristides Quintero.

Scores were 100-92, 99-91, and 97-94 for Perez, who held an interim world title belt at 140 pounds in 2013-2014.

Quintero (20-12-2, 17 KOs) is winless in his last eight bouts.

Lightweight Jackson Martinez (13-0, 4 KOs) won an 11 round unanimous decision over veteran Rolando Giono (22-10, 16 KOs), winning a regional title belt in the process. Scores were 109-100, 108-101, and 110-99 for Martinez.

Lightweight Roger Gutierrez (19-1, 16 KOs) knocked out Willy Morillo (4-5, 2 KOs) at 2:47 of the opening round.
