Euro News: Petr Petrov, Steffen Tangstad, Christian Thun, More

By Per Ake Persson

36-year old Russian based in Spain lightweight/super lightweight Petr "Czar" Petrov (38-6-2) continues his comeback with an eight rounder on March 23 in Albacete against Venezuelan Hermin Isava (10-18), reports Espabox.

The plan is then to go back to the US for another campaign at a world title.

Petrov came close against Terry Flanagan in 2017 with the WBO title at stake but then accepted a fight at short notice against Ivan Baranchyl and things did not go well.

Former two-time EBU heavyweight Steffen Tangstad, who fought Michael Spinks for the IBF title in 1986, is hospitalized and had to have his left leg amputated. Tangstad, who turns 60 this year, suffers from a rare nerve disease called polyneuropathy . Doctors are not sure what exactly caused this disease and there appears to be many contributing factors but boxing is said not to be among them.

The Spinks fight was Tangstad´s last but the official retirement came two years later. He then ventured into TV as a host and commentator and later filled the controversial role of both promoter, buyer and seller of TV rights and commentator - a business adventure that came to an end in 2004.

The Tom-Robin Lihaug-Timo Laine light heavy fight on March 23 in Sotra, Norway, is also for the WBO Euro title. Previously only the newly resurrected IBA I/C belt was at stake. IBA now have Jean Christophe Courreges as President.

The city of Besancon, France, will pay a homage with a benefit show for former two-time EBU welter champ Jean Josselin now 79 years old, March 23. The goal is to raise 10,000 Euro for the aging former fighter, an all-time great in French boxing. Josselin challenged the great Curtis Cokes back in 1966 and went 66-16-7 in his long career.

In the headliner of this show national heavyweight king Raphael Tronche (11-0) defends the title against Zakaria Azzouzi (14-3-2)

German heavyweight prospect Christian Thun (3-0) returns to action after a brief layoff March 16 at Hotel W. in Barcelona. Thun is in against Viktar Chvarkou (2-4).

On top of the show female super featherweight Elhem Mekhaled (11-0) takes on Danila Ramos (7-0) in a fight for the interim WBC title.
