Former two division world champion Bernard Hopkins is the benchmark for every boxer who wants to turn back the clock at the late stage. Yordenis Ugas was denied the chance to contend for two more welterweight belts but will at least retain his own title status ahead of his next fight. BoxingScene.com has learned that a ruling handed down by the World Boxing Association (WBA) will allow the Miami’s Ugas to remain in place as the sanctioning body’s “Super” titlist. The decision was returned on Friday, in response to a formal appeal filed by former eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao who sought to have his title status reinstated after being downgraded to “Champion in Recess” earlier this year due to inactivity.
By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Predicting results on the weekly schedule is hard enough. But predicting results of fights not yet made raises the bar a little. FOX will broadcast the 12-round, 126-pound bout between the Philippines’ Magsayo and Mexico’s Ceja as part of a telecast that’ll air before the pay-per-view portion of the Spence-Pacquiao show.
Roy Jones Jr. doesn’t understand why certain people accuse him of “hating on” welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. In the past, the Hall of Fame boxer has criticized Spence, who holds the IBF and WBC welterweight belts, for not pushing harder for a showdown against WBO titleholder and rival Terence Crawford. But that does not stem from any personal bias against Spence, says Jones, who only wants to see the so-called best prove their case inside the ring.
