Vicente Escobedo was on the most recent edition of BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab to discuss his upcoming fight with Adrien “The Problem” Broner which is taking place on July 21st and airing live on HBO.
Escobedo has been on the comeback trail ever since his loss to Roberto Guerrero back in 2010 and has fought back to back fights in his hometown of Woodlands, CA. He’s put on two great performances for his home crowd but now the tables have turned as he will be going into Broner’s backyard in Cincinnati, OH for this bout.
While most fighters do not enjoy the idea of fighting in a hostile environment, Escobedo has no problem with it and feels it really will make no difference in this fight.
“Yes, it’s in his hometown and I have no problem with that. I’ll definitely go over to his hometown and beat him in his hometown. This is a huge opportunity for me so it’s fine with me. To me it doesn’t matter where it’s at. We can fight in Vegas, Los Angeles, it’s the same thing. It doesn’t change anything” said Escobedo.
Broner has been on a tear at the Super Featherweight division having scored three impressive knockouts in his last three outings and winning his first world title in the process. Broner is known to talk trash and show boat but there is skill and power behind it all.
Escobedo feels he matches Broner in every department and is on the par with the Cincinatti native.
“We know he’s a great fighter. He’s fast, he has power, he’s skillful but so am I” said a confident Escobedo.
“I’m fast, I have power, and I’m skillful too. I’m ready to adjust to whatever he brings to the table. I think we have to fight him and box him. We have to do a little bit of both. Every fighter makes mistakes so I’m going to have to look at the tapes and capitalize on his mistakes and the habits that he has”.
This opportunity for Escobedo isn’t just to get a win over a top level fighter; it’s also to try to fulfill his dream of becoming a world champion. That just adds to his motivation coming into this fight and the proof is in the confidence Escobedo is exuding.
“He hasn’t fought anyone like me. A lot of people get surprised when they get in there with me and realize the power I have and the quickness and ability I have in the ring. He’s definitely going to be surprised”.
