LAS VEGAS – Now Emanuel Navarrete can get some real rest.

The WBO super bantamweight champion scored his second quick knockout in four weeks when he stopped Juan Miguel Elorde on the Tyson Fury-Otto Wallin undercard Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Navarrete scored a knockdown during the third round and landed hard shots on Elorde early in the next round, which prompted referee Russell Mora to stop the scheduled 12-round fight 26 seconds into the fourth.

Mexico’s Navarrete (29-1, 25 KOs) made his third defense of the WBO 122-pound championship he won from Isaac Dogboe nine months ago in New York. He also has won 24 straight fights.

The Philippines’ Elorde lost for just the second time as a professional (28-2, 15 KOs). Navarrete also ended Elorde’s 18-fight winning streak.

Navarrete fought Saturday night just four weeks after defeating Francisco De Vaca (20-1, 6 KOs) by third-round knockout August 17 in Los Angeles. Despite the quick turnaround, Navarrete jumped at the opportunity to fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas.

He performed accordingly against Elorde, who fought for a world title for the first time.

Navarrete appeared well on his way to knocking out Elorde emphatically before Mora stepped in to stop the action early in the fourth round. A crushing right hand by Navarrete wobbled Elorde just before Mora stepped between them and stopped the fight.

Navarrete battered Elorde throughout the third round, when he landed numerous power punches and bloodied Elorde’s nose. A left hook by Navarrete knocked Elorde into the ropes, which held him up and caused Mora to count that as a knockdown.

The knockdown occurred with one second to go in the third round. Elorde reached his feet and the round ended.

Navarrete caught Elorde with a short, left uppercut that stunned him when there were about 30 seconds to go in the second round. Elorde stumbled backward after taking that shot.

Elorde came forward throughout the first round, but neither fighter landed many punches during those three minutes.
