Eleider Alvarez vs. Jean Pascal Eyed For Stevenson-Fonfara

By Carlos Boogs

Multiple sources have advised BoxingScene.com that Eleider Alvarez (22-0, 11 KOs) will return to the ring on June 3rd, in the co-featured bout to the rematch between WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) and challenger Andrzej Fonfara (29-4, 17 KOs).

The frontrunner to face him is former WBC world champion Jean Pascal. A deal was said to have been negotiated between Jean Pascal Promotions and Tom Brown of TGB Promotions, who have a working relationship with Alvarez's promoter Yvon Michel and the boxer's adviser Al Haymon.

Alvarez is the mandatory challenger to Stevenson's title. A step-aside deal was worked out to allow Stevenson to go forward with the Fonfara fight.

Alvarez was in action back in February, when he knocked out former world champion Lucian Bute in five rounds. It was Bute's first knockout defeat since losing to Carl Froch.

In his first fight since getting stopped in a rematch with Sergey Kovalev, Pascal returned to the ring last December and stopped Ricardo Ramallo in three rounds. Pascal has only been stopped twice in his career, both times by Kovalev, who is a much bigger puncher than Alvarez.

Stevenson and Fonfara first met in May of 2014, in and the champion won a twelve round unanimous decision. After Fonfara was dropped and badly hurt in the early rounds, the fight appeared to be on the verge of being over - but the Polish fighter came back strong in the championship rounds and even dropped a tiring Stevenson.

Fonfara won a ten round unanimous decision over Doudou Ngumbu, and then followed up that win with one of his biggest career accomplishments - when he knocked out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in nine rounds in April of 2015.

Fonfara came back that October and won twelve round war that many saw as a Fight of The Year candidate over current WBA 'regular' champion Nathan Cleverly.

Fonfara career hit a huge detour when he was shockingly knocked out in the first round by Joe Smith last June, in what many thought would be an easy fight against an untested Smith. Fonfara bounced back last month at the Barclays Center in New York, when he stopped former world champion Chad Dawson in ten rounds.

Stevenson has not been that active in recent years. He's been out of the ring since July 2016, when he knocked out Thomas Williams Jr. in four rounds. And prior to that he was in action in September 2015, when he knocked out Tommy Karpency in three rounds.

Stevenson keeps ducking. Alvarez became mandatory a year+ ago, and since then has fought better competition than Stevenson. What an embarrassment to the sport.
