LAS VEGAS – Terence Crawford took the first step Friday toward solidifying his next fight. The unbeaten WBO welterweight champion hopes his initial meeting with his promoters at Top Rank Inc. and ESPN leads to him boxing mandatory challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas on December 14 at Madison Square Garden. If that fight can be finalized, ESPN would televise Crawford-Kavaliauskas as the main event after a co-feature that’ll pit IBF lightweight champ Richard Commey (29-2, 26 KOs) against his mandatory challenger, Teofimo Lopez (14-0, 11 KOs).
Terence Crawford knows who he’ll fight next. The date and site of that bout will remain undetermined until the WBO welterweight champion meets with promoter Bob Arum next month in Las Vegas. Arum told BoxingScene.com that he plans to discuss Crawford’s return to the ring with Crawford and his team during the week of the Tyson Fury-Otto Wallin heavyweight fight September 14 at T-Mobile Arena.
Welterweight contender, Ray Robinson believes that he should have deserved the decision in his bout with WBO number-one ranked Egidijus Kavaliauskas in a bout that was seen live on ESPN this past Saturday at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.
More viewers watched Top Rank’s boxing show live on ESPN last weekend than the card it aired the previous Saturday night. Nielsen Media Research figures released Tuesday stated Top Rank’s doubleheader Saturday night from Philadelphia averaged 655,000 viewers. The telecast peaked at 832,000 viewers during the main event – WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk’s fifth-round, technical-knockout victory over Doudou Ngumbu at 2300 Arena.
