Egis Kavaliauskas: record, next fight and profile →
Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas is raring to lay down some leather on his next opponent, welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz. As BoxingScene.com has previously reported, the two are scheduled to face each other on Aug. 14 at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, although the fight has not officially been announced yet by the promoter, Golden Boy.
Another night, another hometown headliner and step-up in class for Vergil Ortiz Jr. In what has become a familiar theme in his rise to contention, the toughest test to date awaits the unbeaten knockout artist from Grand Prairie, Texas. As previously reported by BoxingScene.com, Ortiz (17-0, 17KOs) will next face former title challenger Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas, with their welterweight bout due to take place August 14 on DAZN from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
The next step up in class for Vergil Ortiz Jr. will once again come in the form of a home game. BoxingScene.com has learned that the unbeaten welterweight contender is set to next face former title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas. Their crossroads bout will headline a DAZN telecast August 14 from The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
Terence Crawford considers someone he has beaten to be the perfect opponent for Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s next fight. The unbeaten WBO welterweight champion doesn’t consider Ortiz experienced enough to challenge him just yet. Egidijus Kavaliauskas, on the other hand, would be an appropriate opponent for Ortiz’s return to the ring, according to Crawford.
LAS VEGAS – As competitive as Kell Brook was with Terence Crawford through three rounds Saturday night, Crawford doesn’t consider Brook the best opponent he has fought at welterweight. Crawford told a small group of reporters after his fourth-round stoppage of Brook on Saturday night that Egidijus Kavaliauskas and Jose Benavidez Jr. both were better than Brook. Crawford beat Kavaliauskas by ninth-round technical knockout in his previous appearance, two bouts after he stopped Benavidez in the 12th round of their October 2018 meeting
Terence Crawford recognizes that some boxing observers believe Egidijus Kavaliauskas knocked him down during the third round of their welterweight title fight last December 14 at Madison Square Garden. Crawford definitely disagrees with that viewpoint. The WBO 147-pound champion proudly points out, too, that what he did to Kavaliauskas thereafter is indisputable.
The one thing that hurt more to Egidijus Kavaliauskas than watching a golden opportunity slip away on the title stage was having to sit on that pain for the past nine months. With an eagerly awaited return to the ring came the first win in nearly two years for Kavaliauskas, who stopped Quebec’s Mikael Zewski in the 8th round of their ESPN+ main event Saturday evening at The Bubble in Las Vegas. Kavaliauskas scored knockdowns at the end of round seven and just after the opening bell to start round eight, with the stoppage win coming immediately thereafter.
