Kell Brook Rips Khan, Picks Alexander Over Purdy

Kell Brook is willing to wait longer for a world title shot if it means he can settle his feud with Amir Khan. The 26-year-old welterweight has endured a nightmare spell with injuries forcing two postponements of his fight with WBA champion Devon Alexander before Brook's foot problem caused a third cancellation. Stablemate Lee Purdy has instead been handed a shot at Alexander, while salt was added to Brook's wounds when Khan fought in Special K's hometown of Sheffield last weekend. Khan held on for a points win over Julio Diaz after being floored in the fourth round and Brook remains confident he could halt his British rival.

Sheffield stylist Brook - who boasts an unblemished 29-fight record - was diagnosed with a stress fracture to his foot earlier this week, forcing his proposed challenge to American Alexander to be cancelled for a third time. Matchroom Promotions stablemate Purdy stepped into the breach as mandatory challenger by virtue of his number four ranking with the IBF and faces a daunting assignment on May 18 at Atlantic City's famous Boardwalk Hall.

Both Golden Boy Promotions and Eddie Hearn have confirmed that a deal has been reached for Lee Purdy (20-3-1, 13KOs), the IBF's number four ranked contender, to challenge IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13KOs) on May 18th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Alexander was scheduled to face mandatory challenger Kell Brook, also promoted by Hearn, but the boxer withdrew with a foot injury earlier this week. It was the third postponement for Alexander-Brook due to injuries.

Devon Alexander was scheduled to face his mandatory challenger, Kell Brook, of England, May 18 in Atlantic City on Showtime, but Brook was injured during training and had to withdraw. To ensure Kevin Bizier's presence in Atlantic City to fight Alexander, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer also contacted the president of GYM, Yvon Michel, offering a very attractive proposition. All members of Team Bizier - Kevin, Michel, Marc Ramsay, and Remi Bizier -- met yesterday to analyze the entire situation.The unanimous conclusion of this meeting was to refuse the IBF and Golden Boy's proposal. The current circumstances do not allow Kevin Bizier sufficient training and preparation required to participate in a fight of this magnitude against the established IBF champion. A letter was also sent this morning to the Chairman of the IBF Championships Committee, Mr. Lindsey Tucker, for this purpose.

Alexander was scheduled to fight mandatory challenger Kell Brook on May 18th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Brook withdrew a few days ago with a foot injury. Devon Alexander's trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham has advised BoxingScene.com that undefeated Kevin Bizier (20-0) is next in line to face Alexander on May 18th in Atlantic City. Bizier, who defeated Nate Campbell in February, is ranked #3 by the IBF and is the highest rated contender. Alexander was scheduled to face the IBF's #1 contender Kell Brook but the Brit pulled out of the fight with a foot injury.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has advised BoxingScene.com that his team is currently working on finding an opponent to step in to face IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander on May 18th in Atlantic City. Alexander was scheduled to face his mandatory challenger Kell Brook but he was forced to pull out of the fight with a foot injury. The fight had been postponed in January and February because of injuries as well. Alexander's fight will still be the Showtime televised co-feature underneath the Lamont Peterson-Lucas Matthysse showdown.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said: “Kell has recently developed pain in his right foot. Following specialist review and investigations over the last ten days he has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of his right fourth metatarsal and a further injury of his right navicular, both of which require on-going treatment including withdrawal from full training.
