Devon Alexander: record, next fight and profile →
BoxingScene.com caught up with Devon Alexander shortly after his dominant unanimous decision victory over Jesus Soto Karass on Saturday night in Carson, Calif. The fight was part of a triple header that was televised by Showtime. The former two division champion said that he was pleased with the way he fought but said that there is always room for improvement.
CARSON, Calif. - The telecast opened with former two-division world champion Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs), of St. Louis, winning a hard-fought unanimous 10-round decision in a terrific, fast-paced scrap over determined Jesus Soto Karass (28-10-3, 18 KOs), of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. It was Alexander's first ring appearance since losing a twelve round decision, and his IBF welterweight crown, to Shawn Porter last December.
Luis Sandoval catches up with welterweight contender Jesus Soto Karass to discuss his ten round decision loss to former two division world champion Devon Alexander at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, what went wrong in the fight, the injury to his hand, what he plans to do next and more.

But he was a tough, tough competitor. I want to thank God, Al Haymon, my family and coach. We got it done St. Louis.
By Francisco Salazar - Robert Guerrero and Yoshihiro Kamegui fought inside a ring at the Stubhub Center in Carson, CA. Based on the action for 12 rounds, the bout could have been held in a bar, a parking lot, or in a backyard and it still would have produced the same fisticuff fireworks. Back and forth they went, giving the 5,711 boxing fans in attendance and million more watching on television something to enjoy. But the outcome was never in doubt, despite Guerrero having to deal with an eye that was shut and a cut as well. Guerrero won a 12 round unanimous decision over Kamegai, a win where Guerrero may or may not have answered his detractors. Guerrero had not fought since May of last year, when he lost a one-sided unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas, NV. Part of the layoff could be attributed to the lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, his promoter. He had sued Golden Boy Promotions to get out of his contract, but was unsuccessful. Kamegai had won his two previous fights after losing a 10 round unanimous decision to Johan Perez in June of last year. From the opening bell, it was obvious this fight was not going to be a tune-up or a showcase fight for Guerrero. Kamegai came to fight and pressed the action in the first couple of rounds. Guerrero landed the telling blows from the beginning, but ate one punch after landing two or three of his own.
Sometimes the best fights come from desperation. Devon Alexander and Jesus Soto-Karass are both at a point where winning is essential for the future of their career, while a loss could forever cast them off in a welterweight division already overflowing with talent. Only one will have the chance to move on as they square off in the opening leg of a Showtime-televised tripleheader Saturday evening at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Both are coming off of a loss, coming in separate cards in back-to-back weekends last December, and to two of the hottest young fighters in the game.
StubHub Center, Carson, California - In a crossroads battle of welterweight contenders, former two division champion, Devon Alexander (26-2, 14KOs), bounced back from his loss to Shawn Porter with a dominating ten round unanimous decision win over tough Jesus Soto Karass (28-10-3, 18KOs). The scores were 97-93, 99-91, 99-91. Alexander fast hands and movement was an obvious issue for Soto Karass in the early rounds. Soto Karass tried to make it a brawl midway through the contest and he succeeded in moments, but Alexander's faster hands were able to make it to the target first, and Alexander's defense was key as Soto Karass rarely blocked a shot. Soto Karass was often digging hard hooks to the body, but Alexander took the shots very well through six.
Jesus Soto Karass threw nearly twice as many punches per round than Devon Alexander- but paid a price. Opponents (Thurman, Maidana, Berto, Aydin) landed 47% of their power punches vs. Karass. Alexander's not a big puncher, can Soto walk thru Devon's shots? Alexander would be much more effective if he stepped in more with is jab (13% landed vs. Porter, Matthysse, Maidana, Bradley).
