Undefeated Italian Emiliano Marsili is the new IBO lightweight champion after a brutal battle with home fighter Derry Mathews at the Olympia in Liverpool.

Derry Mathews and Emilano Marsili vie for the vacant IBO lightweight title later tonight. The bout takes place at Liverpool’s atmospheric Olympia venue and will be televised live by BoxNation, Sky channel 456, here in the UK. Vaughan Promotions have put together a massive bill and hope to usher in their first world champion, of sorts, to kick off their 2012 campaign.

Christmas was cancelled in the Mathews household this year. Not that current English lightweight champion Derry is a modern day Scrooge, far from it. With a fight for the vacant IBO belt scheduled for January 20, Mathews was simply so eager to continue his impressive comeback that he chose to forego the traditional Christmas spent over indulging with family for one of physical hardship with only trainer Oliver Harrison and a gym full of like minded fighters for company.

There will be added incentive for Queensberry Promotions’ two Cruiserweight champions, Leon Williams and Tony Conquest, when they go head to head in what is set to be an all-out war at York Hall on 13th January, with Francis and George Warren looking to get the winner in contention for a European title shot at some point down the line.

According to The Echo, Alisher Rahimov has withdrawn from his upcoming fight with Derry Mathews. They were scheduled to clash in January for the IBO lightweight title at the Olympia. Rahimov is reportedly going to accept a bout against Ji Hoon Kim in America, with the WBC silver belt at stake. Rahimov had signed a contract to fight Mathews and his withdrawal to take an alternate fight may set the stage for a future legal dispute. Mathews' promoter has managed to secure unbeaten Italian Emiliano Marsili, 35-years-old with a record of 29-0-1 record. Former champion Steve Forbes is scheduled to make his British debut on the Mathews-Marsili undercard, against Ryan Barrett over eight rounds.

Liverpool boxer Derry Mathews says he could be in line to fight for the vacant IBO world lightweight title.

Derry Matthews' European lightweight title dream was scuppered by a badly bloodied nose in Newport on Saturday night after an accidental clash of heads led to a technical draw. The Liverpudlian had been forced to wait for his shot at Welshman Rees and was acquitting himself well until the premature fourth-round ending. Photos by Kris Agland.

Entertaining veteran contender Bradley Pryce (32-10, 18 KOs) continued his journey with a close win over Danny Butler (19-5, 4 KOs) at Newport Leisure Centre in Newport, Wales. Pryce fought on even terms with the younger Butler up until the last ten seconds of the eighth round, when he rocked his opponent with a teeth-clutching right uppercut and floored him with a subsequent left hook to the shoulder. It proved to be a decisive moment in the fight, as the referee (and a sole judge of the contest) raised his hand with 77-75 points win. BoxingScene had it scored the same for the winner.

Gavin Rees says he is in perfect shape as he prepares to defend his European Lightweight title against Derry Mathews at the Newport Centre tomorrow night, live on Sky Sports.

Gavin Rees, who faces Derry Matthews on Saturday, says there will be no repeat of the alarming burn-out that almost cost him victory in his previous fight. Welshman Rees beat Andrew Murray in June to claim the vacant European title, but after being in control early on he tired badly in the latter stages. But the 31-year-old insists that a new training discipline will ensure he can easily go the distance against Mathews.
