Tijuana's WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (27-2, 20 KOs and one draw) is waiting for the final details of his next fight. The date is set, August 20th, and so is the opponent, the very capable Alejandro Sanabria (32-1, 24 KOs and one draw).
The venue is the only missing piece. Either Mexicali or Tijuana will play host - and either location is perfect for DeMarco.
"I'm ready to fight. I have been working in the gym lightly, but soon we will pick up the pace," said DeMarco. "Sanabria is a strong fighter. I know that I will have to be at my best, but I'm not worried. I am sure my team will put together a good strategy. I'm happy because I'll fight in Baja California, something that I haven't done in a long time, so I'm looking forward to that day."
DeMarco was hoping to fight Jorge Linares in a July rematch. Those plans were changed, without notice, on March 31 when Linares suffered an upset two round TKO loss to Sergio Thompson. In some strange maneuvering, Thompson is ranked as the top lightweight under the WBC - but on Saturday night he fought and won the WBC's silver International title at super featherweight.
