The war of words have been flying around for the last few days, between high profile boxers Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez, and the Mexican superstar's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.
Mayweather recently took to social media, and bashed Canelo for statements that were made regarding a potential rematch between the two of them. Mayweather won an easy twelve round decision over Canelo in September of 2013.
Mayweather also downplayed the recent five year contract that Canelo signed with the new streaming service, DAZN, which guarantees the boxer $365 million.
De La Hoya believes Mayweather, 41-years-old, is doing whatever he can to remain relevant in boxing.
Mayweather retired from the sport in August 2017, after stopping then UFC champion Conor McGregor in ten rounds.
"Mayweather had to respond, he couldn't help himself. He had to come out from under that rock and spoil the party for Canelo. For Canelo, this is his era and this is his time, and the fact that he's getting paid $365 million dollars over a five year period, it's the richest contract in any sport, by far, at that age," De La Hoya explained to BoxingScene.com.
"The fact that Floyd Mayweather had to come out and try to spoil it for him, it just goes to show you who he is. It's sad, because he has to try to stay relevant by being negative. There are a lot of people who like it and there more people who don't like it. Let's just enjoy this moment, this era, it's called the Canelo era.
"The only way a rematch [with Canelo] would happen is if Floyd comes out of retirement, and fights Canelo at 160, that's Canelo's weight - 160. And both of them would make a crap load of money. Look, Floyd is now calling out Khabib.... it's another one of those fights to fool the people and make them fork over their hard earned money.
"Floyd can do whatever he wants to do, he's his own person. But don't go around and bash everyone. I don't go around town and say that Floyd hit nine different women and is a man who cant keep his hands off women and beats them up. But when people something about me personally, I have to attack and defend myself.... it's only fair."
