Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs), is very interested in matching him against WBA/IBO champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs).
Lemieux captured the vacant title last month with a sensational twelve round decision over former champion Hassan N'Dam, who went down four times in the fight. Golovkin was last seen in the ring in May, getting a knockout win over Willie Monroe Jr.
The fight won't happen in 2015. De La Hoya says Lemieux will first have to make his mandatory defense and then face Golovkin in early 2016. Golovkin will fight again in the fall against an opponent to be determined.
"It's a fight that interests me a lot. There are options for Lemieux, but it is a very interesting fight that I like," De La Hoya said to ESPN Deportes.
"Golovkin is a fighter who perhaps can not fight as well going backwards, as he does when he comes forward. Against someone who throws so many shots and a puncher like Lemieux, that's why I find a fight with Golovkin very interesting."
