De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Munguia is a Natural Fight For The Future

By Miguel Rivera

A few days ago, Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez stated that he's no longer in favor of facing another opponent from Mexico.

However, he also left the door open for a potential fight in the future with WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia, who is being groomed as a potential Canelo opponent - possibly in 2020.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya, who promotes both Canelo and Munguia, believes the fight is a "natural" for the future.

Canelo, who holds the WBC, WBA middleweight titles, will collide with IBF champion Daniel Jacobs in a high stakes unification on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Should both Canelo and Munguia continue to win, the fight is likely.

"That fight is very possible, the fact that Munguía is young, he is growing, learning, he is a champion at 154 pounds, he is loved by many, he has millions of fans in Mexico, he has a great style, a warrior, a fighter, that's a natural fight," De La Hoya said to ESPN Deportes.

De La Hoya makes it clear that he's not thinking about that fight for the immediate future.

"In time," said De La Hoya. "Canelo is on another level. Munguía has to reach that level and it is a fight that can be done."

Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed Munguia's mandatory fight with Dennis Hogan is set for April 13 in Monterrey, and said they have big plans for him, but they will not try to compare him at all with Canelo.

"Canelo, there is only one of him. We hope that Munguía is also unique," he said in the talk with A Los Golpes.

Golden Boy and co-promoter Zanfer Promotions have signed Munguía with the DAZN streaming service for five or six fights, although they did not detail the exact number.

Oscar and canelo are throwing a bunch of different ideas around to use in the future. They’ve mentioned a third fight with GGG. A potential move up to 175 to face Kovalev. And now they’re bringing up Munguia again to…
