Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) vs. Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) is the second biggest fight in the sport of boxing, only behind the highly demanded fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
"Is what the people and the world is waiting for. The biggest fight after Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is Canelo and Cotto. Saul gave me orders to get it done for May [2] and I'll look to do it," De La Hoya said.
Canelo will return to the HBO airwaves in December. De La Hoya is finalizing the date and opponent, admitting that former welterweight champion Joshua Clottey is a strong candidate for the fight.
"We'll see next week [who Canelo will fight], we have no fixed date, no specific opponent," De La Hoya said. Let's see who is available and who will fight and we'll get it done. Going to HBO will open doors for big fights. Canelo is going to be a significant figure in the sport of boxing for the next 10 years, most importantly, he will be open for the big fights."
