David Lemieux: record, next fight and profile →
How silly can boxing be sometimes? If WBO middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders wins Saturday night, his name will surely come up as a potential unification opponent for Gennady Golovkin down the road. If David Lemieux wins, he will be a second time middleweight ‘champion’ after losing his IBF title to Golovkin. In boxing, for the price of a sanctioning fee, reality can be what one makes of it.
White Plains, NY/Philadelphia, PA -- Undefeated, two-time world champion Demetrius Andrade will be ringside for the WBO World Middleweight Title bout between undefeated champion Billy Joe Saunders and David Lemieux.
Billy Joe Saunders would’ve preferred defending his title against David Lemieux in England. Each of Saunders’ first 25 professional fights have taken place in England, but Lemieux wasn’t willing to travel there for a shot at Saunders’ WBO middleweight title. As long as the compensation met his demands, Saunders had no problem crossing the Atlantic Ocean for a fight in Lemieux’s native Quebec.
David Lemieux is more than confident he’ll become not only the first professional opponent to beat Billy Joe Saunders, but that he’ll knock out the WBO middleweight champion. Lemieux challenged Saunders during their final press conference Thursday at the Laval Sheraton to back up all of the trash the brash British champion has talked during the buildup toward their fight Saturday night in Laval, Quebec. They’ll meet in a 12-round, 160-pound championship match at Place Bell, a new arena near Lemieux’s hometown of Montreal (HBO; 9:40 p.m. ET).

A very eager and motivated Billy Joe Saunders is targeting a middleweight unification fight against the victor of the expected rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.

World champion Billy Joe Saunders hopes that new surroundings brings out the best in him as he puts his World Boxing Organization middleweight title on the line against David Lemieux. The 28-year-old Englishman will fight for the first time in North America on Saturday as he faces the Canadian at the Laval Place Bell arena in Lemieux's home province of Quebec.
The weigh-in Friday for Billy Joe Saunders’ middleweight title defense Saturday night was at least less eventful than the weigh-in for his last fight. England’s Saunders and Montreal’s David Lemieux made weight Friday afternoon in Laval, Quebec, Canada, but not before Saunders and his trainer, Dominic Ingle, yelled until Lemieux got on the scale a second time. They protested because Lemieux got off the scale quickly the first time he weighed in at exactly 160 pounds.
David Lemieux claims he is more than just a puncher. The former IBF middleweight champion feels his boxing ability is underrated not only by fans and media, but by Billy Joe Saunders. That’ll help, according to Lemieux, the French-Canadian contender become a two-time 160-pound champion when he challenges Saunders on Saturday night for the WBO middleweight title in Laval, Quebec (HBO; 9:40 p.m. ET).
