Bilbao, Spain - Danny Williams (39-6, 31KOs) was brought in as trialhorse to help build up the record of a younger unbeaten prospect, but he turned the tables on everyone by not following the script and stopping Konstantin Airich (9-1-1, 8 KOs) in the seventh-round of a wild fight at the Pabellon Lasesarre.
Arena Box had high hopes for Airich to pull through. It wasn't meant to be. In a fight that had a little bit of everything, knockdowns, fouls and screwups by the officials. Williams lost points for low blows in rounds two and five. Airich scored two knockdowns on Williams in the third-round and appeared to be cruising to a win after he began to punish Williams and scored another knockdown in round-four.
Referee Alfredo Garcia Perez would take another point from Williams in the fifth after he broke them and Williams hit Airich on the break.
Knowing he was very far behind in a fight scheduled for eight-rounds, Williams began to get desperate and look for the knockout shot, and he got it when he knocked Airich down at the end of the fifth. Airich was never able to fully recover. Williams continued the assault in the sixth and put Airich down for the second time, but as he was trying to close the show - the bell ended the round early. Williams would not let up in the seventh-round and got the stoppage with a few minutes left in the fight.
In the co-feature, cruiserweight Herbie Hide (43-4, 41 KOs) won a twelve-round unanimous decision over Ehinomen Ehikhamenor (12-2, 7KOs). The scores were 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109.
