Danny Garcia: record, next fight and profile →
IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (23-0) recently met with the media in Las Vegas and discussed a variety of topics in his boxing career. Next up for Spence is his IBF mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo (22-0). The June 16th fight will be a Dallas homecoming for the Texas resident.
So with Keith Thurman pulling out of his scheduled return to the ring on May 19th with a hand injury, the likes of Shawn Porter are now forced to wait even longer to fight for the WBC welterweight title. Porter, who lost a narrow decision to Thurman in the summer of 2016, defeated Andre Berto last year in what was sanctioned as a WBC final eliminator for a mandatory title shot.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has been forced to take action in light of the latest injury suffered by Keith Thurman. Thurman, who holds the WBC, WBA welterweight titles, has been inactive since last March - when he won a twelve round split decision over Danny Garcia to unify the two world titles.
Danny Garcia Video Interview - Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York - Deontay Wilder survived a pummeling from Luis Ortiz, then knocked out the challenger in the 10th round Saturday night to retain his WBC heavyweight title.
The ratings for Showtime’s second “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcast of 2018 weren’t as high as the ratings generated by its first telecast of this year. According to ratings released Wednesday by Nielsen Media Research, the main event of the premium-cable channel’s tripleheader Saturday night, Danny Garcia’s ninth-round stoppage of Brandon Rios, peaked at 558,000 viewers. The Garcia-Rios fight was watched by an average audience of 516,000.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman has revealed that his organization granted a special permit to welterweight champion Keith Thurman, so he could make an optional defense on May 19th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, following that voluntary defense - Thurman is then bound to fulfill back to back mandatory obligations - against Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia.
A day after his fighter received a controversial draw against Victor Ortiz in a FOX televised main event in El Paso, Kevin Cunningham is still very upset with the outcome. Devon Alexander started very fast against Ortiz and appeared to do enough to win at least 8 rounds. Ortiz pressed the action most of the night but was largely ineffective with Alexander having success with his counter punches.
A discouraged Brandon Rios realized in its aftermath what his technical-knockout defeat to Danny Garcia could mean to his career. Unlike his lopsided loss to Timothy Bradley two years earlier, Rios was well-prepared and put forth a commendable performance against Garcia on Saturday night in Las Vegas. The result still means Rios (34-4-1, 25 KOs) has been stopped in two of his past three bouts and hasn’t won a significant fight since stopping an ill-prepared Mike Alvarado in their rubber match three years ago.
WBC, WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) may technically have back to back mandatory defenses in his future. Thurman is scheduled to make a voluntary defense on May 19th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The opponent has yet to be determined. Thurman has been out of the ring since winning a twelve round split decision over Danny Garcia last March to unify the welterweight belts.
Danny Garcia assured anyone who would listen Saturday night that he’s not ducking Errol Spence Jr. A significant faction of fans and Spence himself doubt Garcia’s willingness to fight the unbeaten IBF welterweight champ later this year. Garcia disputed that contention following his ninth-round stoppage of Brandon Rios at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
