Danny Garcia: record, next fight and profile →
On Tuesday, it was officially announced that former welterweight champions Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter would collide for the vacant WBC welterweight title. The contest takes place on September 8th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Welterweight stars and former 147-pound titleholders Danny "Swift" Garcia and "Showtime" Shawn Porter will square off for the vacant WBC Welterweight World Championship live on SHOWTIME Saturday, September 8 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™.
Showtime, which will televise their 12-round, 147 championship match, issued a press release that confirmed Garcia-Porter will headline its broadcast September 8 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Philadelphia’s Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) and Las Vegas’ Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs) will fight for the vacant WBC 147-pound championship Garcia lost to Keith Thurman last year.
Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) is still angered over last year's defeat at the hands of Keith Thurman. They collided in March 2017, with Thurman winning a split decision to unify the WBC, WBA welterweight titles at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
BoxingScene.com has been advised that the welterweight showdown between former world champions Shawn Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs) and Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) is now being targeted to take place on September 8th, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Porter and Garcia will battle for the vacant WBC title that was vacated earlier this year by Keith Thurman, who has been inactive since March 2017.
Errol Spence Jr.’s plan is to fight an undetermined opponent prior to the end of this year, then the Danny Garcia-Shawn Porter winner, and then Keith Thurman. If, however, Thurman is willing to face Spence before the unbeaten IBF welterweight champion gets in the ring with Garcia or Porter, Spence happily will alter his order.
Errol Spence Jr. defended his IBF Welterweight World Championship with a first-round knockout of previously undefeated mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo in a homecoming fight Saturday on Showtime at Ford Center at The Star.
Errol Spence Jr. is especially interested in the Danny Garcia-Shawn Porter fight because he wants to face the winner. Spence picked Garcia to emerge from that upcoming fight for the vacant WBC welterweight title. Philadelphia’s Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs), who’s ranked No. 1 by the WBC, and Las Vegas’ Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs), who’s ranked No. 2, are expected to fight either on August 25 or September 8 for the 147-pound championship Keith Thurman gave up last month.
In a few months, former world champions Shawn Porter (28-2-1, 17 KOs) and Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs) will square off for the vacant WBC welterweight title. It's a fight that Porter and his outspoken father/trainer, Kenny, have yearned for. And the father admits to being pleasantly surprised that Garcia actually took this assignment.
Errol Spence Jr. had hoped his first welterweight title unification fight would’ve come against Keith Thurman. The unbeaten IBF 147-pound champion happily will settle for the winner of the Danny Garcia-Shawn Porter bout. Garcia and Porter will fight for the WBC welterweight title Thurman gave up in April.
