Danny Garcia admits that his presence at the most recent boxing event at Barclays Center was a business trip more so than taking in a night at the fights.
The upcoming junior middleweight clash between Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez will also feature a battle of fathers. Danny Garcia is trained by his father Angel Garcia, while Benavidez is also trained by father, Jose Benavidez Sr.
Jose Benavidez Jr. could have traveled in a straight line to the target pursued by his next opponent. The former interim junior welterweight titlist and welterweight title challenger instead chose to gamble on himself in belief that he could have his cake and eat it too.
Junior middleweight contender Jose Benavidez Jr. has received another chance to pull off a major victory. On July 30 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Benavidez will collide with former two division world champion Danny Garcia. A new weight division to conquer was always in the cards from the moment Danny Garcia was ready to resume his career. The former lineal junior welterweight champion and WBC welterweight titlist is now set to take on the best challenges that await the junior middleweight division. His debut comes more than 19 months after his December 2020 twelve-round, unanimous decision defeat to unified welterweight champ Errol Spence Jr. (28-0, 22KOs), which he viewed as his last piece of business in the division.
By Thomas Gerbasi - Danny Garcia is only 34 years old. It’s hard to believe, that even after a nearly two-year layoff, the former two-division world champion could be in his physical prime as he approaches his return to the ring against Jose Benavidez Jr. on July 30.
Jose Benavidez Sr. knows precisely what his son is up against heading into his next fight. The younger Benavidez was tabbed as the opponent of choice for Danny Garcia’s junior middleweight debut, which headlines a July 30 Showtime tripleheader from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event will mark the ninth headliner at the famed venue for Philadelphia’s Garcia (36-3, 21KOs), a former two-division titlist who topped the first boxing show at Barclays in his repeat win over Erik Morales in October 2012.
