Plans for a January 25th FOX pay-per-view showdown pitting WBC/IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence against former two-division champion Danny Garcia were scrapped when Spence suffered a serious car accident on October 10th.
Spence was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from his Ferrari which was traveling at a high rate of speed. Fortunately for Spence, he only suffered some broken teeth and lacerations.
While Spence won't be fighting on January 25th, Garcia will still be fighting on the date. His father and trainer Angel revealed on his Instagram page on Wednesday that Danny will still be fighting on the date. Angel didn't reveal who would be in the corner opposite his son but hinted that it would be a big fight.
Later in the day Al Haymon's right hand man Sam Watson confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Garcia would indeed return to the ring on January 25th.
Last week BoxingScene.com's Jake Donovan broke the news that WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez will also fight on that date against his mandatory challenger Avni Yildrim.
What is still unclear is whether Garcia will be headlining a FOX pay-per-event or will be headlining a FOX card with Benavidez-Yildrim serving as the chief supporting bout.
Garcia last appeared in the ring in April when he stopped Adrian Granados in 7 rounds in what was his only fight of 2019. Prior to that bout, he lost a close unanimous decision to Shawn Porter in September, 2018.
