by David P. Greisman - Not every fight means everything, but every fight means something. Some of these somethings mean less, though just because they mean less doesn’t mean they mean nothing at all. We knew that this past Saturday’s Showtime card aired out of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, wouldn’t be the most meaningful broadcast. That didn’t make the fights meaningless. Boxing at times can resemble episodic television programming, moving the characters and drama along and building toward conflict and a conclusion. Middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs is being built up toward his second world title shot, which will likely come against Peter Quillin. Heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder is being built up toward his first world title shot, which is expected to come against the winner of the upcoming rematch between Bermane Stiverne and Chris Arreola. Junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia is continuing to be built up as a star and potential future opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Former champion Daniel Ponce De Leon, 33-years-old, could possibly retire from boxing after suffering a second round TKO defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez on Saturday night in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Back in 2008, Ponce De Leon (45-6, 35KOs) was knocked out by Juanma in one round when they were super bantamweights. It was Ponce De Leon's second TKO defeat in two fights.

Juanma was dropped in the second, but then came back to drop Ponce De Leon twice, and then forced the stoppage. The was a rematch of their 2008 super bantamweight encounter, which Juanma won by knockout in the first round.

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. is tabbing Daniel Ponce De Leon to knock Juan Manuel Lopez out in four rounds later tonight in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Several years ago, Juanma became a player when he knocked out Ponce De Leon in the first round for the WBO super bantamweight crown. The rematch is taking place at super featherweight. Vazquez and Juanma are no strangers to trading words. The two Puerto Rico boxers are far from friends. Promoter Peter Rivera of PR Best Boxing mentioned a date of August 25th for a possible fight between Juanma and Vazquez, but Vazquez denies that information.

Experienced trainer Freddy Trinidad said former two-division world champion Juan Manuel Lopez (33-3 30 KO's) is in excellent physical condition after two months of intense work for his upcoming rematch on Saturday night in Bayamon against Daniel Ponce de Leon (45-5 and 35 KO's), where the International title of the World Boxing Council will be at stake. However, he was emphatic in saying that he 'is not a magician' and Juanma is the one who has to execute his moves and strategy in the ring.
