The selective Daniel Jacobs (47 punches thrown per round), landed 41.8% of his power punches and landed/threw slightly below the middle. avg. for jabs. AS a result of his selective approach, Jacobs opponents landed just 9.8 punches per round and just 6.2 power shots. Derevyanchenko, making a huge step up in class, landed nearly 40% of his total punches and a whopping 51.9% of his power shots (18.7 per round).
If Daniel Jacobs could’ve chosen his next opponent, he wouldn’t have picked Sergiy Derevyanchenko. It’s not that Jacobs wanted an easier path to a middleweight title. It’s more that their fight Saturday night is complicated because Andre Rozier trains Jacobs and Derevyanchenko. Rozier will work Jacobs’ corner. Gary Stark Sr. – who, along with Rozier, has trained Derevyanchenko – will be the unbeaten Ukrainian’s chief second.
Sergiy Derevyanchenko won 390 of over 400 amateur fights in an extensive career that included a trip to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The undefeated Ukrainian also fought without headgear in the World Series of Boxing before he making what is officially considered his pro debut in July 2014. Daniel Jacobs knows better than any boxer that his stablemate can fight, but he still feels as though his experience as a professional prizefighter is one of his advantages over Derevyanchenko entering their 12-round, 160-pound middleweight title fight Saturday night in New York.
Sergiy Derevyanchenko understands that his livelihood is at stake Saturday night. If he defeats Daniel Jacobs, he’ll have leverage by becoming a middleweight champion. Title unification fights and seven-figure paydays await if the unknown Ukrainian can win the most difficult fight of his four-year pro career.
NEW YORK – Daniel Jacobs owned a portion of the WBA’s fragmented middleweight championship for 2½ years. Never during that reign did Jacobs feel as though he was really recognized as a world champion. That distinction belonged to Gennady Golovkin, who was correctly considered the WBA’s true middleweight champion when Jacobs owned the WBA’s world 160-pound crown.
Highly respected amateur and former Ukrainian Olympian, Sergiy Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KOs), feels strongly that he's a smarter boxer than former unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin - who won a close twelve round decision over Daniel Jacobs in March 2017. On Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York, Derevyanchenko will collide with Jacobs for the vacant IBF middleweight crown.
by Cliff Rold - This is the beginning of goodbye. While industry speculation was in the air well before, the aftermath of Saul Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin II made it official. HBO Boxing will soon join the Gillette, the commentary of Don Dunphy, and Wide World of Sports as part of the rich broadcasting history of the spo...
Daniel Jacobs meets Sergiy Derevyanchenko inside the Theater at Madison Square Garden, with the winner taking the IBF's vacant version of the 160-pound title. There's been a flurry of changes within the division lately, with Alvarez owning half of the four major titles after edging longtime champion Golovkin last month in their rematch. Demetrius Andrade won the other belt last week, and Jacobs (34-2, 29 KOs) can put his name on the list of champions.
