WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) has yet to make a decision regarding his return, but plans to do so in the near future. There were weeks of discussions to make a fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for May 2nd. Those talks fell apart two weeks ago when Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, made a decision - pursuant to his fighter's wishes - and told Cotto's team they were moving on.

Canelo has already reached an agreement to face James Kirkland, either on May 2nd or May 9th. Cotto's plans are still unknown, with opponents like former two-division world champion Timothy Bradley being mentioned. Some expect he will return in June on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City.

Cotto's mandatory challenger, WBA/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs), return on February 21 against Martin Murray in Monaco. The WBC will order Cotto to face the winner of that match.

"We wanted the fight [with Canelo], but we were unable to reach an agreement and they made their decision. That's not a problem for us. There are several options available for Miguel. Miguel will review them and make a decision," said Cotto's adviser Gaby Penagaricano.
