BoxingScene.com caught up to Top Rank Promotions CEO, Bob Arum, to discuss the future of WBA junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto. Arum said that he is targeting the 30-year-old Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) for a rematch with 33-year-old ex-titlist Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs), who dethroned Cotto as WBA welterweight champion with an 11th-round knockout in July of 2008.
According to reports in Puerto Rico, former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28KOs) could possibly face WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29KOs) on December 3. The frontrunner to face Cotto on the December date is Mexico's Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27KOs). The Mexican boxer is still recovering from injuries that he suffered in last November's loss to Manny Pacquiao. If Margarito is not physically recovered to face Cotto by the December date, then Cintron has a very good shot of stepping in. Cintron has a very tough fight ahead, against Carlos Molina on July 9 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
According to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto will have the full court advantage on which opponent he'll face in the fall on pay-per-view. In the coming weeks, Arum plans to sit down with the representatives of Antonio Margarito and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Arum will put together two offers and bring them to Cotto's legal adviser, Gabriel Peñagaricano. Cotto will them make a decision based on the financial numbers of the two packages.
