Superstar Miguel Cotto is looking to put his name in the history books as he looks to become the first Puerto Rican fighter to win four world titles in four different weight classes when he faces WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez June 7th at Madison Square Garden.

The fight will be fought just one pound shy of the Middleweight limit at 159 pounds but even then, it’s still a move up in weight for the Cotto who is already considered by many to be a small 154 pound fighter. When BoxingScene spoke to Cotto during his Los Angeles press conference, he was asked how he would go about putting on the additional weight.

“I’m going to fight at a weight I’m going to feel comfortable [at] and to feel strong enough and have the energy to fight. I’m not necessarily going to 160. I’m going to [be at the] weight where I feel comfortable. All I want is to be prepared enough to beat Sergio Martinez” Cotto would tell BoxingScene.

Much like Floyd Mayweather who has weighed significantly less than the 154 pound weight limit in his three ventures into the Junior Middleweight division, Cotto plans to come in lighter into this middleweight contest.

During the face offs in the three city press tour, many pointed the significant size advantage Martinez holds over the smaller and shorter Cotto. When Cotto was asked if he felt the size difference would be a factor, Cotto said he actually didn’t feel Martinez was all that much bigger.

“He’s not too big. He’s just 5’9 or 5’10; I’m 5’7 ½. I trust in myself and my skills and what I’m capable of doing in the ring and I know I’m going to do my best” said Cotto.

If Cotto wins the middleweight crown he will have done it by beating the fighter many consider to be the best in the division. One has to wonder however, if Cotto is victorious if he’ll actually stay at 160 to defend his crown or drop back down in weight.

“It’s a little early to talk about it, you know? So we have to wait until June 8th” said Cotto with a smile.

Miguel will head back to Puerto Rico and will return to Los Angeles the first week of April to commence his training at the Wild Card Gym with trainer Freddie Roach.

Contrary to prior reports, Cotto will not be sparring with Manny Pacquiao despite Pacquiao being a southpaw like Cotto’s opponent Sergio Martinez.
