Welterweight prospect Christopher Guerrero knows he is getting closer to the top of the card as he approaches his first 10-round bout.
Guerrero, 12-0 (7 KOs), faces Dennis Dauti this Thursday, February 6 at the Montreal Casino. The bout will be streamed in the United States on ESPN+
The 23-year-old Guerrero trains in Montreal and is eager for the start of what he hopes is a long run of 10- and 12-round bouts. Even though this is a step up in his career, Guerrero is turning his long training camp – which started September 6, the day after he stopped Courtney Pennington – into the best camp he has experienced.
“Every fight is important for me and I don't take any fight less serious than the other,” Guerrero told BoxingScene. “They all mean the same to me. It’s just one step closer to where I want to be and what I want to achieve.”
Guerrero, for readers who are just now encountering his name, has two interesting tidbits about his career. He was born in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where his parents met, but they ended up getting married and living in Montreal. Guerrero’s mom is Italian but a Canadian citizen, and Guerrero’s father is Mexican. The other tidbit is that he is trained by a 25-year-old boxing coach, Giuseppe Moffa.
“We're two young people trying to come up in the world of boxing together. We’re trying to put the pieces together,” Guerrero said. “We have fresh minds and we’re hungry.”
Dauti, a 31-year-old Greek fighter who lives in Switzerland, fought three times in 2024, with two of the three bouts ending in a draw. Dauti holds a record of 25-5-2 (9 KOs) and has one thing that Guerrero doesn’t have – experience. Dauti has gone 172 rounds as a professional, whereas Guerrero has gone 49.
Guerrero has been in camp with IBF welterweight titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis. He described it as “a very humbling experience.”
Guerrero hopes this fight will lead to big bouts in the future.
“I think early next year I could probably get somewhere near the top five [in the] rankings,” said Guerrero, who’s ranked 15th by the IBF. “I’m ready for anything that comes my way. I already know I’m going to look good, so it’s not that I’m stressed about anything.”
