For several months, WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provdonikov (23-2, 16KOs) did everything in his power to secure a fight with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez. Marquez, who already held the WBO crown at 140, had no interest in fighting for the same belt. Marquez made it clear that he was gunning for a world championship at 147-pounds. But, Provodnikov was stunned when Marquez finalized a fight with Mike Alvarado for May 17th. Provodnikov stopped Alvarado in ten rounds last October.
BoxingScene.com has been advised that WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov (23-2, 16KOs) vs. Chris Algieri (19-0, 8KOs), scheduled for June 14th, is shifting to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The HBO televised event was previously targeted for the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The Barclays has an exclusive contract with Golden Boy Promotions, who work with HBOs rival Showtime. BoxingScene was told that Barclays reached out to Golden Boy, who gave them the thumbs up to host that event. Neither Provondikov or Algieri are promoted by Golden Boy's main business rival, Top Rank.
After taking part in high profile fights against Timothy Bradley and Mike Alvarado, WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov is "very disappointed" that Chris Algieri (19-0, 8KOs) will be his next HBO televised opponent on June 14th at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Provodnikov was hoping to face more of a high profile opponent. While Algieri is a good fighter, he is unknown to most fans and Provodnikov believes he won't get as much credit in winning as he would against names like Juan Manuel Marquez and Brandon Rios.

Negotiations for Ruslan Provodnikov's next fight has been ongoing for two rounds, according to the WBO champion's manager Vadim Kornilov. Provodnikov (23-2, 16KOs) is scheduled to make the first defense of his title on June 14th. Several names have been mentioned over the last few weeks, including Brandon Rios, Antonio DeMarco and Hank Lundy, but Kornilov says undefeated Chris Algieri (19-0, 8KOs) is potentially going to be the HBO televised opponent.

By Cliff Rold - 29-year old Jr. Welterweight Chris Algieri (19-0, 8 KO) won his eighth in a row at the Paramount Theatre in his hometown of Huntington, New York, on Friday night with a skillful ten-round unanimous decision over 23-year old Emmanuel Taylor (17-2, 12 KO) of Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. There were no knockdowns in the bout but there were plenty of solid exchanges on a night where Algieri was too active and too quick to be denied. Algieri weighed in at 142 for the contest, Taylor at 141. Both men looked to have filled out to well better than those weights by fight time. The referee was Harvey Dunn. Each looked to establish their jab in the first, Taylor doing more of the pressing as Algieri worked around the ring and looked for spots for his right hand. Action heated up as the second round progressed, a notable exchange in the final minute featuring hard uppercuts from both men. Algieri mixed in a flurry of blows to go along with his to maintain control of the frame. The next three rounds all saw Algieri continuing to throw flashier shots with Taylor incrementally increasing his presence in the fight. In the fifth, Taylor had his best round, landing hard and often. Algieri responded strong, coming back in combination and stuffing the left hand underneath to the body.

Ever since he put on the gloves as a teenage kickboxer, the Long Island junior welterweight has jotted down everything when it comes to his daily routine, from the techniques he practiced to the food he ate. It’s as big a part of his fighting career as the rounds he puts in, and he’s not about to stop now. “I try to get an idea of what made me feel good and what makes me feel best, and also how I felt during a session,” he said. “If I felt really fit and really strong that day, I try and look back and analyze to see why. It helps me to self-analyze and self-assess how my training is going, so the next time I don’t even have to think about it. At this point, it’s almost autopilot.” Eleven years of note taking will do that for you, and despite being on the verge of big things like an ESPN2 Friday Night Fights headlining gig against top ten-ranked Emmanuel Taylor this week, Algieri continues to look backward in order to help him move forward.
