Carlos Adames: record, next fight and profile →
As of late, Carlos Adames has been forced to settle for his second option. Initially, after getting his career back on the winning track, the 29-year-old reeled off three consecutive victories. In the immediate aftermath, the Dominican native was hopeful that he had done just enough to warrant a title shot against one of the middleweight division's current belt holders.
2022 was a breakout year for Carlos "El Caballo Bronco" Adames (22-1). The Bob Santos trained fighter followed up an upset December, 2022 victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko with a 3rd round beatdown of Juan Macias Montiel in December. With the victory he captured the interim WBC middleweight title.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman revealed that WBC middleweight world champion Jermall Charlo’s long stint of inactivity, of almost two years, was caused by a “serious, important mental health episode”.
Jermall Charlo hasn’t always been the most active fighter around. But the Houston native would routinely step through the ropes and proudly defend his WBC middleweight title. But, despite taking care of business against Juan Macias Montiel in 2021 for his fourth title defense, Charlo has spent his time sitting sequestered on the sidelines.
Showtime recently announced a series of upcoming fights including the June 24th showdown pitting WBC interim middleweight champion Carlos “Caballo Bronco” Adames against former unified junior middleweight champion Julian “J Rock” Williams. The fight is slated to headline a triple-header that will take place at the new boxing hotbed, The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
If Charlo, whose twin brother, Jermell, is the undisputed junior middleweight champion, does indeed return to the ring at that time, it will likely be against an opponent of middling caliber. But the fight after that, Espinoza said, figures to be a far more “meaningful” one.
Julian Williams is one of only two opponents who have beaten Jarrett Hurd during Hurd’s 10-year professional career. Hurd was a 6-1 favorite the night Williams dropped him in the second round and won their fan-friendly 12-round bout by unanimous decision in May 2019. Williams won the IBF, IBO and WBA 154-pound championships from Hurd at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.
The mandatory challenger for Jermall Charlo’s WBC middleweight title will instead fight another opponent Charlo has beaten in his next fight. Showtime revealed Tuesday that Carlos Adames will defend his WBC interim middleweight title against Julian Williams in the 12-round main event of a tripleheader the network will televise June 24 from The Armory in Minneapolis. The three-bout broadcast also will include a junior middleweight bout between Erickson Lubin and Luis Arias.
LAS VEGAS – Hector Luis Garcia’s success in 2022 is a testament to the undefeated Dominican southpaw’s perseverance. The WBA super featherweight champion became so disenchanted with the boxing business before he capitalized on his two opportunities last year that he considered quitting the sport. The WBC named numerous mandatory challengers for its titles during its annual convention Wednesday in Acapulco, Mexico. Carlos Adames was not among them. The Dominican middleweight publicly petitioned the WBC to name him the mandatory challenger for Jermall Charlo’s
