Carl Frampton: record, next fight and profile →
Carl Frampton (25-1, 14 KOs), 31-years-old, is focused on regaining a world title in 2018. Frampton, a former two division world champion, lost his WBA featherweight title by way of a close twelve round decision to Leo Santa Cruz in January 2017.
Last month in Belfast, former two division world champion Carl Frampton (25-1, 14 KOs) secured a very solid win with a dominating twelve round unanimous decision over one-time pound-for-pound star Nonito Donaire. But there is another star who is rising up in the ranks in Northern Ireland, unbeaten prospect Michael Conlan (6-0, 5 KOs).
Nonito Donaire may well have lost in Belfast recently –– but he’s ready to return there before the year is out. The former four-weight world champion was outpointed by Carl Frampton on April 21 at the SSE Arena in the city. Donaire was on the wrong end of a trio of 117-111 cards at the end of 12 rounds as Frampton set up a showdown at Windsor Park.
Carl Frampton has had his return date already confirmed. The Belfast featherweight was only in the ring less than two weeks ago. But Frampton, the WBO interim world title holder after a convincing points win over Nonito Donaire at the SSE Arena in his home city on April 21, knows the date for his comeback.
FIGHT WEEK IN Belfast once again more than delivered the goods in a big way and the plotting of Carl Frampton’s next move is now very much in the works. It is a complete pleasure promoting major shows in the city and the response of the boxing public is always first class. The atmosphere generated in the arena is unsurpassed and it makes for such momentus occasions.
Gervonta Davis: Davis had a lot of competition for “biggest winner” this past weekend. Jermall Charlo ended his fight with Hugo Centeno inside two rounds. Carl Frampton schooled Nonito Donaire. And Amir Khan needed only 39 seconds to demonstrate that he’s back.
Although Carl Frampton experienced some anxious moments in rounds five, seven, 11 and 12 thanks to pockets of Nonito Donaire power shots, those moments proved all too brief for Donaire.
Frampton (25-1, 14 KOs), of Belfast, was the sharper fighter from the opening bell and imposed his will on the veteran Donaire (38-5, 24 KOs) in front of his hometown fans. Frampton controlled the distance well and was strong on the inside, landing a fierce right hand that caused swelling to Donaire’s left eye in the second round.
