Carl Frampton Will Be Cautious: Donaire Puts People To Sleep

A fight with Nonito Donaire was first discussed all the way back in 2014, but now Carl Frampton is just days away from facing the Filipino Flash.

This Saturday, The Jackal headlines his second home, Belfast's SSE Arena, to take on Donaire for the WBO Interim World Featherweight Title.

While Frampton believes this clash will be a good test before he hopefully goes on face a World Champion later this year, he appreciates he needs to be at his best to topple the man who has won World Titles in four weight divisions.

"I think that in terms of accolades in the ring, he's accomplished more than anyone I've ever fought. That includes guys like [Leo] Santa Cruz," Frampton told Behind The Gloves.

"He's a four-weight World Champion. He was as high as number three in the pound-for-pound rankings at one point. Very good fighter, very slick.

"One of the best knockout reels I've ever seen," argued the 31-year-old. "When he knocks people out, he puts them to sleep, legs twitching and stuff on the ground. So he's a dangerous fighter."

Donaire has stopped 24 of his 38 victims, and his only defeats in recent years have come against high-level opposition like Guillermo Rigondeaux and Nicholas Walters.

Frampton admits Donaire's punching power makes him nervous, but also excites him at the same time: "The nerves I'm going in to the fight with is a good thing, because if you can control them, which I believe I can, I can use them to my advantage. I think I'll be switched on from start to finish and I have to be.

"We've been linked for a long time now. When I was Champion in 2014 at Super-Bantamweight, and he was a Champion, they were talking about the fight then," he recalled.

"I believed then I could beat him and I believe even more so now. In this frame of mind and how I'm feeling, I think I win the fight and I win it in style!"

Donaire's way past his best, but Frampton's career has been in disarray post Santa Cruz, with some very sub-par performances. I feel that Frampton will focus himself for this though and should win clearly. He steps up a level against…
