Chepo Reynonso, co-trainer and manager of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, considers former three division world champion Felix 'Tito' Trinidad to be the best fighter to come out of Puerto Rico.
On November 21, Canelo will face another Puerto Rican star in the form of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Cotto may have earned more money and holds the title as the only boxer from Puerto Rico to win world titles in four weight divisions - but that is not enough to overtake the accomplishments of Trinidad.
"In my opinion, and with all due respect, undoubtedly the best fighter of this beautiful island is Tito Trinidad. Although I started hearing a lot about the great Carlos Ortiz, I think Tito is the biggest, not only for his achievements in the ring but also for his charisma with the people skills," Reynoso told Jose Sanchez.
Trinidad coincidently picked against his countryman, by predicting a solid victory for Canelo in November.
Chepo's son and team trainer, Eddie Reynoso, says Canelo is in his prime while Cotto already has one foot out the door.
"This is a good fight, two good fighters, one in his prime and one on his way out but managed to win a title," said the younger Reynoso.
He feels Cotto always fights the same and they don't need a road map to work out a strategy on how to beat him.
The negotiations to make the fight took months. The younger Reynoso says the negotiations were drawn out because Cotto would come back with fresh demands after every discussion.
"Miguel put down a thousand things as requirements. If we would have said (that the fight can be a maximum of) 150 pounds, he would have came back and said 49," Reynoso said. "But for our last fight we came back after a year without a fight and we made 154.5-pounds perfectly."
