By the end of this month or in February, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs) and his team, consisting of Chepo and Eddy Reynoso, will know a lot more information regarding their next return.
As BoxingScene.com reported on Monday night, Canelo is going to headline the first boxing event at the new MGM arena on May 7th in Las Vegas.
According to the boxer's manager, Chepo Reynoso, they will soon begin their training camp for what is going to be the first defense of the WBC middleweight title which Canelo captured last November from Miguel Cotto.
"We plan to meet next week with Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya, Eric Gomez, Roberto Diaz, Ramiro Gonzalez, to see what what's coming up. We hope to have more certainty by the end of this month or beginning of February," Chepo told ESPN Deportes.
Canelo has already started some light workouts after coming back from vacation.
The opponent is unknown and several names like Gabe Rosado and Willie Monroe Jr. and others have been floating around. Chepo cautions that everything is speculation until the meeting with Golden Boy, where all of the involved parties will review the potential names.
"For now we can not say anything until we talk with Golden Boy. We can mention names, I can mention names, but in the end it will only be speculation, it is important to know what names may are mentioned after the meeting," Chepo said.
The upcoming fight will be a voluntary defense for the Mexican superstar, who is then going to be required to make a mandatory defense against WBA/IBO/IBF world champion Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin in the fall. Golovkin is likely going to defend his world titles on April 23rd at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
