Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez has a planned meeting with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, to discuss the boxer's potential ring return on a date in September.
Canelo has been out of the ring since November of 2019, when he moved up by two weight classes to score a knockout victory over Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title.
He was scheduled to return to the ring in May, possibly against WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but the entire event was pushed back due to the coronaviris pandemic.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Saunders will not be the opponent for Canelo in the fall.
IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin made it clear that he won't be facing Canelo is a trilogy fight in September. He wants to make a mandatory defense of his title first.
And, according to Gomez, they are not going to secure any world champion to fight Canelo.
Some of the boxers who were targeting Canelo include WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith.
Canelo's return is likely taking place behind closed doors - so there won't be any live event revenue, which limits the amount of money that Golden Boy can offer an opponent to face Canelo.
Holding versions of world titles at 160 and 168 - Gomez indicates that his boxer wants to fight at super middleweight.
“I don’t think we’re going to be able to lure any of the champions and a Golovkin fight can’t happen now because of this,” Gomez said Yahoo Sports. “That’s a fight we were hoping to do. I don’t think we’ll be able to get those super middleweight champions, but there are still some good guys out there I think we’ll be able to get.
“We’re going to show Canelo everything. He’s concerned about how things go with all the guidelines, so we’ll lay everything out for him and let him make his call.”
