Nearly two weeks remain until the Nevada State Athletic Commission will determine whether the Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin rematch can take place as planned.
That hasn’t stopped MGM Resorts International from offering full refunds to consumers who’ve purchased tickets to the jeopardized event. According to a story posted to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s website Wednesday, an MGM Resorts International spokesperson confirmed that the company, which co-owns T-Mobile Arena, is providing full refunds to those that have bout tickets to the high-profile fight, scheduled for May 5 at T-Mobile Arena.
“In the event a fan requested a refund, they could get one at the original point of sale and in full,” the MGM Resorts International official stated in a text message to the Review-Journal.
The Alvarez-Golovkin middleweight championship rematch is the biggest fight on the boxing schedule in the United States this year. The event could be postponed because the NSAC has temporarily suspended Mexico’s Alvarez for twice testing positive for clenbuterol, a performance-enhancing drug, in February.
Alvarez contends he tested positive for that banned substance from eating contaminated meat in Mexico. If the former middleweight and junior middleweight champion doesn’t provide enough proof to satisfy the NSAC at its monthly meeting April 10 in Las Vegas, Alvarez will remain suspended and their lucrative rematch will be postponed indefinitely.
Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) has been extremely critical of Alvarez for testing positive for a PED, but the IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC 160-pound champion repeatedly has stated that he still wants to fight Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) on May 5. Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a controversial 12-round draw September 16 at T-Mobile Arena.
Golovkin, 35, and Alvarez, 27, have continued training for their rematch as if it’ll still take place May 5 – Golovkin in Big Bear Lake, California, and Alvarez in San Diego.
