Leigh Wood says he will be achieving the dream he had when he first stepped into the gym as a kid by defeating Xu Can in their world title showdown on Saturday.

Leigh Wood believes that Xu Can's promoter Golden Boy have made a mistake by choosing him as their WBA Featherweight World Champion's latest defence on the first week of Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex on Saturday July 31, live worldwide on DAZN.

Xu Can will defend his WBA "regular" featherweight world title against Leigh Wood on the first week of Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex on Saturday July 31, live worldwide on DAZN.

Xu Can appears destined to head to the United Kingdom for his next fight after all. The high-octane featherweight will return to the ring for the first time since the pandemic, as he will defend his WBA “World” featherweight title versus England’s Leigh Wood. China Daily—the leading English-language publication in China—reports that the bout will take place July 31 (August 1 local time) in London.

Josh Warrington has shot back at the recent statements from WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Russell was insulted by an offer of $1 million, from promoter Eddie Hearn, for a fight with Warrington.

Josh Warrington’s fight with Xu Can collapsed after the IBF refused to recognize the Chinese boxer as WBA featherweight champion. Can holds the WBA’s “regular” title, while Leo Santa Cruz is their “super” champion. The WBA’s failure to upgrade Can to the senior belt after Santa Cruz boxed Gervonta Davis at super-featherweight led to the IBF refusing to sanction a Warrington-Can fight as a unification.

Josh Warrington has admitted that giving up the IBF featherweight title to pursue other world champions is a risk as there are no guarantees that those fights will actually happen. Warrington has vacated the title that he won from Lee Selby in 2018 after the IBF refused to sanction a unification fight against either Can Xu, the WBA champion, or Gary Russell Jr, the WBC champion, in April.

Josh Warrington has today vacated his IBF world title after the IBF refused to sanction his proposed unification fight in April. Earlier this month, the proposed mega fight with Xu Can was delayed with a new working date of April 24. Matchroom will now look to finalise that fight or make a giant match up with WBC king Gary Russell.

A frustrated Josh Warrington says he cannot understand why Can Xu did not want to face him in an arena with no fans and has questioned why the Chinese boxer is in the sport if he doesn’t want to take a big fight. Warrington, the IBF featherweight champion, has been thinking about a fight with Can for the past year, having been originally supposed the face the WBA’s regular champion last June in front of 25,000 fans in Leeds.
