Newcastle - After a double quick debut last month, Cameron Vuong (2-0, 1 KO) got a real introduction to professional boxing from the unorthodox and awkward John Henry Mosquera (5-5, 1 KO).
Vuong took a little bit of time to figure out exactly what he had in front of him.
Whenever 20 year old Vuong led with hooks or neglected to set up his attacks, Mosquera would counter with his wide hooks and chopping right hand but when Vuong kept things sharp and straight and used his jab up and down, the Colombian found his task much tougher. Voung got a pretty stern reminder that he couldn’t afford to relax in the second when he walked in without setting up his attack and took a solid right hand.
Vuong took away Mosquera’s already slim chances of springing an alright shock. He began to sit back a little in the third and wait for Mosquera to lead. Mosquera wasn’t in trouble but struggled to create openings himself and had no answer for Vuong’s fast jab.
Mosquera is clearly a confident character and never stopped pressing forward but isn’t a puncher and Vuong settled in behind his jab, mixed in the occasional right hand and stayed out of trouble.
After six rounds, Vuong was awarded a comprehensive 60-54 decision victory. There was no doubt about the winner but Mosquera may have deserved a round for his early efforts.
